CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Manning felt the effect of the SUV being driven fast over uneven ground. His consciousness returned slowly. His head ached and he could feel where blood had soaked through his hair and down the back of his neck. He made no attempt to move, letting his body reset itself. He knew he was still on the floor of the vehicle. His captors were on the wide seat above him. He could hear them talking. They sounded pleased with themselves, relaxed even. Something in his favor. He cracked one eye. Inches away from his face was the stock end of an AK-47. The butt was on the floor of the SUV. Straining his eyes, Manning followed the outline of the assault rifle. It rested between the legs of its owner, leaning against the front of the seat. The guyâs hands were draped loosely against the upraised barrel. A second thing in Manningâs favor.
He had no way of knowing how long a journey they might be involved in or if at the end he might find he was surrounded by a greater number of Inigoâs men. Manning didnât intend finding out if he could avoid it. So, any action had to be undertaken now.
Waiting was not an option. Manning always tried to take the short route to solving any problem.
His check of the AK-47 had showed him the weaponâs selector lever was set for automatic fire.
He took a deep breath, turned his body and closed his hands around the Kalashnikov.
As the weapon was jerked from his loose hands the guy shouted to his companion.
A split second later the interior of the SUV was filled with the hard crackle of autofire. Manningâs finger held back the trigger as he swept the muzzle back and forth between the men on the rear seat. Hot shell casings rained down on him, followed by warm blood spray as his close-quarter fire found targets, punching in through flesh and bone. Booted feet jerked and kicked out, catching Manning. He ignored the frantic movement as he exhausted the AK-47âs magazine.
Pushing up off the floor, Manning ignored the bloody bodies and made a grab for the other assault rifle that lay on the seat between the dead men.
The SUV was swerving wildly as the driver tried to maintain control and pull his handgun from its holster on his side. He spotted movement in the rearview mirror and saw the blood-spotted face of the man who had just slaughtered his partners. The guy made a successful attempt at freeing his pistol and began to lift it.
Manning jabbed the muzzle of his AK-47 against the side of the manâs head and put a single round into it. Bloody gore spattered the interior of the SUV. The guy keeled over. His hand slipped from the wheel and the SUV swerved off the rutted, dusty road. Manning snatched at the wheel with one hand, his other reaching for the ignition key. He switched the engine off and felt the SUV starting to slow.
